# Every business has a brand. The question is whether it's intentional or accidental.

Did you mean to do that?

It's a question I find myself asking a lot, usually quietly. When I look at a company's website. When I hear a team describe what they do. When I sit in on a sales call.

Because here's the thing: every company has a brand. Even the ones that have never thought about it.

Your brand is the sum of everything you say and do. Every interaction, every decision, every email your team sends. It exists whether you shape it or not.

So the real question isn't whether you have a brand. It's what kind.

There are two kinds: **accidental** and **intentional**.

## How accidental brands happen

No leader sets out to build an accidental brand. It happens quietly, usually for one of these reasons:

- Brand isn't a top priority. There's always something more urgent.
- Brand gets dismissed as fluff: nice to have, not real work.
- Brand is seen as separate from the business, instead of as the business.
- Brand lives in the marketing department, and nowhere else.

The results are predictable. Marketing promises one thing and operations delivers another. Messages drift. Money gets spent on tactics that don't add up to anything. Your team describes the business five different ways, and customers can't tell what makes you different, so they default to price.

None of this shows up as one big problem. It shows up as a lot of small ones, which is exactly why it's so easy to miss.

## What intentional brands do differently

Intentional brands are built on purpose and woven into every part of the company. From marketing to management, everything lines up behind one clear idea of who you are and what you stand for.

That takes a brand strategy that's both aspirational and operational:

- **The aspirational side** is your purpose, the impact you want to make, and how you want people to feel.
- **The operational side** is the culture and systems that make it real: how you hire, train, decide and measure success.

When both are in place, your team doesn't need a rulebook for every situation. They understand what the brand stands for, so they make brand-led decisions on their own, and every one of those decisions makes the brand stronger.

The payoff shows up everywhere: clearer focus, a more engaged team, a better customer experience, deeper trust, resilience when things change, and growth.

## What it looks like in real life

I once joined a B2B firm as its first marketing hire. The business was growing, and it was very good at what it did. But it had never been through a brand strategy process, and it showed. The team couldn't agree on how to describe the company, and prospects couldn't tell it apart from competitors who all sounded the same.

> The brand wasn't bad. It was accidental.

Once we defined who the firm was, what made it the better choice, and how to say it, and launched it to the team first, everything else got easier. Inbound leads grew 750%, and inbound now brings in 60% of new business.

Same company. Same services. The difference was intention.

## A quick way to find out which one you have

Ask three people on your team, separately: *"What do we stand for, and what makes us different?"*

If the answers match, you're on your way. If they don't, the gaps you hear are the same gaps your customers feel.

## Be intentional

Your brand is already telling a story about you. The only question is whether you're the one telling it.
