# Stop out-featuring your competitors. Start out-feeling them.

Walk into almost any bank and you'll hear the same promises. Competitive rates. Convenient locations. Mobile banking. Personal service.

Every one of them is true. And every one of them could describe the bank across the street.

That's the trap in most industries. When everyone competes on features, features stop being a reason to choose. And when there's no reason to choose, people fall back on price.

## Features matter. They just don't last.

Features and services are important. People need to know what you offer. But they aren't a long-term strategy.

Launch a better app, and a competitor will launch one next year. Lower your rates, and someone will match them. Competitors will always catch up.

What they can't copy is how you make people feel.

> Products are things people use. A brand is something people feel.

People stay with companies that make them feel seen, valued, confident, connected and inspired. That feeling is what turns a customer into a loyal one, and a loyal one into someone who tells others.

## What it looks like in real life

A Wisconsin community bank near Madison, Wisconsin, was acquiring a bank with more than 120 years of history in small rural towns. The combined bank needed a new name, and it needed to get there without the change feeling like a big-city takeover.

The new features mattered. Expanded lending, digital banking and financial education gave customers choices their hometown bank never could.

But in focus groups, that's not what customers talked about. They talked about how the bank made them feel. For generations, the people there knew their stories. Decisions were made by neighbors who looked at who they were, not just their credit score. Customers felt seen as more than a number.

They wanted the new tools. They also worried about losing that feeling. One customer said it simply:

> "Take good care of us."

So the strategy focused on keeping the feeling. We built the brand on a simple belief: a neighbor is worth more than a number. The new services became the proof that customers could have both, the handshake they trusted and the modern tools they needed, without having to choose.

The features gave customers more options. The feeling gave them a reason to trust the change.

## How to out-feel your competitors

- **Listen for the feeling, not just the need.** Ask customers how they want to feel when they work with you, and what they're afraid of losing.
- **Line up your competitors.** Read their websites side by side. Anything they all say, features included, won't set you apart.
- **Name the feeling you want to own.** Choose one or two that are true to who you are and matter most to your customers.
- **Use features as proof, not the point.** Your services show you can deliver the feeling. They shouldn't be the whole story.
- **Deliver it in every interaction.** A feeling is built by how your people show up, not just by what your ads say.

## A quick test

Read your homepage out loud. Count how many sentences describe what you offer, and how many describe how it feels to work with you.

If features win, you're competing on something a competitor can match.

## The takeaway

Competitors can match your features. They can match your price. They can't match how you make people feel.

Stop out-featuring your competitors. Start out-feeling them.
