# Five signs you've outgrown doing your own marketing

![Picture of Summer Hagens](https://authentically23.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Profile%20Photo%20with%20Background.jpg?width=50&name=Profile%20Photo%20with%20Background.jpg) By   Summer Hagens  ·   2 minute read

You started your business to do the work you love. Somewhere along the way, you also became the marketing department.

At first, it made sense. You knew the business better than anyone, and you couldn't justify a hire. You wrote the website, posted when you could, and figured it out as you went.

That works, until it doesn't. Here are five signs you've reached that point.

## 1. Marketing only happens when you have time

And you never have time. Posts go quiet for weeks. The newsletter you started is three months behind. Marketing gets whatever is left after clients, payroll and everything else, which usually isn't much.

## 2. Nothing goes out without you

Every post, every proposal, every web update waits for your review. You've become the bottleneck, not because you want control, but because no one else knows the story well enough to tell it.

> If you're the only one who can tell your story, your story can only grow as fast as you can.

## 3. Your business has changed, but your marketing hasn't

You've added services, moved upmarket or found a sweet spot with a certain kind of client. But your website and materials still describe the business you were three years ago.

## 4. You're saying yes to every idea

A podcast. A new social channel. The ad a friend recommended. Each idea sounds good on its own, but without a plan, they pull in different directions and none of them gets a fair chance to work.

## 5. Referrals are carrying the business, and they're leveling off

Word of mouth is a great sign. People love working with you. But referrals alone are hard to predict and harder to scale. If growth depends on who happens to mention you this month, it's time for a more intentional approach.

## What to do about it

Outgrowing your own marketing doesn't mean you need a full-time marketing executive tomorrow. It means you need the right level of support for where you are:

- **If you have people doing the work but need direction,** a senior advisor a couple of days a month can set priorities, review plans and keep everything on track.
- **If you're building your marketing function,** a hands-on partner can create the plan, manage freelancers and help you hire.
- **If you're in a growth push, launch or rebrand,** an embedded leader can take full ownership of marketing while you focus on running the business.

Whichever fits, the first step is the same: get clear on who you are, who you're for and what you want people to do next. Then build the plan around that.

## The takeaway

Outgrowing your own marketing isn't a problem. It's a sign your business is growing.

The next step is making sure your marketing grows with it.
